Sony is offering a firmware upgrade for Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera NEX-6.

Improvements after firmware upgrade

  • Provides support for the following ”Fast Hybrid AF” compliant lenses for SELP18105G, SEL35F28Z *, SEL55F18Z *, SEL2470Z *, SEL2870 *, SEL70200G * and compatible E mount lenses in the future *
    * Fast Hybrid AF is effective only in the central area of the frame

Improvements from firmware version 1.01 to version 1.02

  • Provides support for the Fast Hybrid AF function compliant lenses :
    SEL20F28, SEL1670Z

  • Addition of AF drive system for movies
    AF drive system for movie was added in order to enhance the scalability of future E-mount systems. This feature ensures a higher degree of flexibility in the design of future E-mount lenses. We will be able to provide lenses that can even better satisfy our customers.

Improvements from firmware version 1.00 to version 1.01

  • Provides support for the following Fast Hybrid AF function compliant lenses:
    SEL1018, SEL35F18, SELP18200, SEL30M35, SEL50F18, SEL18200LE

    The firmwares of the following lenses are also required to be updated in addition to this update: SEL30M35, SEL50F18, SEL18200LE.
    -
    - For SEL18200LE, please contact nearest Sony service centre for firmware update.

How to check the firmware version 

  1. Select Menu → Setup → Version on the camera.
  2. The firmware version is displayed. If your firmware version is Ver. 1.02 or later, the upgrade is not required.

Details

IMPORTANT:

  • When performing the firmware upgrade, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50 or the AC adaptor AC-PW20 (sold separately).
  • Do not remove the battery or AC adaptor during the upgrade; otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power shutdown.
  • Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.

Start Firmware Updater

  1. Save the downloaded file onto the Desktop of your computer (recommended).
    For Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 users: Under the initial settings of Internet Explorer, the update file will be saved in the Downloads folder. Click the Desktop tile from the Start screen and find the downloaded file in the Downloads folder by using Explorer.
  2. Close all currently running programs on your computer.
    Double-click Update_NEX6V103.exe to start up Firmware Updater.

     
    Check the USB connection mode

    Select Menu → Setup → USB Connection on the camera, and confirm Mass Storage is selected. If the mode other than Mass Storage is selected, please select Mass Storage.

  3. Remove the memory card from the camera, and then connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
    Note: When the camera is connected to the computer, the LCD screen of the camera turns off. Please proceed to the next step.

    If the computer cannot find the camera, the message “ Could not find the camera for this update.” appears on the computer display. Try the following if this happens.
    - Disconnect the USB cable and connect it again.
    - If the computer has multiple USB terminals, try with the other terminals.
    (Your computer may have some USB terminals on the backside.)
  4. Confirm is displayed on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer screen.
    Note: If the icon is not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step.
  5. After confirming the above, click Next on Firmware Updater.

    Note: From this step onwards, never turn off the camera until the firmware upgrade is completed.
  6. After confirming the screens on the above steps, click Next. The current version and the version after the upgrade appear on the lower left part of the screen.

    Upgrade is required, click Next.




    If the screen below appears, the upgrade is not required. According to the message, stop the USB connection and click Finish. Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack or the AC adaptor, reinsert battery pack or connect AC adaptor, and then turn on the camera.

  7. Click on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer screen to stop the USB connection.

    Notes:
    - Please keep the USB cable connected even after stopping the USB connection on the computer with the above operation.
    - If the icon is not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step.

  8. Press the center of the control wheel to reset the camera.

    Note: The screen turns off when the center of the control wheel is pressed. Please proceed to the next step.
  9. Click Next on Firmware Updater

  10. After resetting, reconnection of the camera is verified, and the screen below appears.

  11. Click Run to start the upgrade. The progress bar appears while upgrading (approximately 5 minutes).

    Note: Never turn off the camera nor disconnect the USB cable while upgrading.
  12. When the upgrade is completed, the camera will automatically restart. It may take a few minutes to restart the camera. Make sure the camera is turned on and wait until the LCD screen appears again. Click Finish after the LCD screen appears.

  13. Click on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer screen to stop the USB connection.
    Note: If the icon is not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step.
  14. Disconnect the USB cable.

Check the firmware version

  1. Select Menu → Setup → Version on the camera.
  2. The firmware version is displayed. The firmware upgrade was completed successfully if Ver. 1.03 is displayed.
