How to keep the computer to the updated status by using Windows Update in Windows XP?

    Automatic Updates refer to the feature searching for the latest released High Priority Updates programs by Microsoft via Windows Update, and then finishing automatic download and installation.
    The updating programs released by Microsoft enable users to keep the computer up to the latest state and to enhance the security of the computer.

    Users can get the free updating programs via Windows Update.

    Note:

    Please log on with Administrator Account to perform the steps below.

    Users can receive update programs notification only when logged on with Administrator Account.

    To run Windows Update, users should first connect the computer to Internet.

    How to start Automatic Update (how to check whether Automatic Update is started)?

    1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    2. When System Properties appears, click Automatic Updates, and select any item below.
      • Automatic (recommended)

        After selecting Automatic (recommended), Windows will find the updates that apply to the computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background. Then Windows starts the installation on the set schedule.
        Please click this to set schedule.
        Windows will automatically update the computer according to the schedule set.
      • Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them

        After selecting Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them, Windows will find updates that apply to the computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background. After downloading the programs, an Automatic Updates icon appears in the notification area of the taskbar and inform that preparation for updating programs is completed.

        Please install the updating programs manually because Windows cannot install them automatically.

      • Notify me but don't automatically download or install them

        After selecting Notify me but don't automatically download or install them, an Automatic Updates icon appears in the notification area of the taskbar when new updating programs are available to download or to install.

        Users can select all or part of the update programs.
        After finishing the download, an icon appears again in the notification area of taskbar and inform that the preparation for update has been completed.

    How to disable Automatic Update?

    1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    2. When System Properties appears, click Automatic Updates, and then check Turn off Automatic Updates.

    3. Click OK.

    Windows will not notify when there are new updating programs.
    Updating programs can enhance the security of the computer, so it is recommended to regularly check whether there are new updating programs released.

    How to install the updating programs that have been installed?

    Please follow the steps below to install updating programs when there is a balloon icon of new updates in the notification area of the taskbar.

    1. When the balloon icon appears on the right corner of the notification area of the taskbar, please click the icon.

    2. When How do you want to install updates? appears, select Express install, and then click Install.

    3. If End User Supplementary License Agreement appears, please check the contents of it, and then click I accept..

    When installing some updating programs, this screen may not appear.


    1. When the balloon icon of The updates are being installed…… appears on the right corner of the notification area of the taskbar, the installation begins.

    2. You have successfully updated your computer. appears.


    Remark

    When installing some updating programs before You have successfully updated your computer. appears, Installing Wizard will appear.
    Please install the programs according to the wizard.



    How to install updating programs via Windows Update?

    1. Click Start→All programs→Windows Update.
    2. When Windows Update appears, select any program that needs installing.

    Express is used as an example here.

      • Express:
        Windows can perform express updating.
        Beginners are recommended to use this feature.
      • Custom:
        Select the updating programs that need installation.

    1. Select the programs displayed, and then click Install updates..

    Click the name of the program for the details of this program to display.
    Programs displayed vary with different Windows editions.

    1. Click Start → Windows Update.
    2. Click Review your update history on the left of the interface.

    1. Confirm the state of the updates.

    Installation of updates is correct.

    Installation of updates fails.

    Installation of updates is canceled.
